Have you ever wondered why colds and the flu always seem to show up during the holiday season? There are some startling statistics that may shed a little light on the answer. According to Dr. Neil Nedley, MD, in his book, Proof Positive, (pp. 183-184) researchers performed a series of studies that examined how refined sugar consumption weakens the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria. The studies showed that the capacity for white blood cells to destroy bacteria is weakened as sugar consumption rises. If a person consumed no sugar for twelve hours, each white blood cell could destroy an average of fourteen bacteria. If that same individual ate the equivalent of six teaspoons of sugar (such as found in a half-cup of pudding or a mere two pieces of candy) each white blood cell could only eliminate ten bacteria; a twenty-five percent decrease in killing power.
Progressive deterioration in the white cells' bacteria fighting capacities beyond twenty-five percent occurred when twelve teaspoons and then eighteen teaspoons were ingested. When twenty-four teaspoons of sugar were consumed, the amount in a medium piece of cheesecake or a milk shake, the white blood cells were so compromised that they could only destroy an average of one bacterium each. That represents a ninety-two percent reduction.
Impairing Effects on White Blood Cells Not Short-Lived
The researchers further demonstrated that sugar's impairing effects on white blood cells are not short-lived. The impairment lasted a full five hours in normal subjects. This means that during that five-hour period, the white blood cells could not perform optimally. When you consider how often most people consume sugar, especially during the holiday season, it becomes quite apparent why the frequency of colds and the flu increase, as their white blood cells cease to function effectively for many hours during the day.
These researchers also discovered an interesting side note: a thirty-six hour fast seemed to significantly increase the ability of the white blood cells to kill off bacteria. If you do become sick and are not hungry, it may be to your advantage to avoid eating, or at least to eat very sparingly for a day or two.

That would explain why my Mt.Dew drinking husband has a cold right now and me, the water only drinking wife, is fine. :)
WoW, Paul. This is the most incredible article that I've ever read and I must spread the words to my friends about it...
Thanks for the tips and reminder!
I wish sugar wouldn't always get a bad rap, but it does. You just pointed out another reason not to eat too much of this good stuff. It's more than I wanted to know.
Great information Paul. Yet another reason to avoid sugar. My parents believed sugar was terrible for children and didn't buy too many sweets when we were growing up. I never got hooked and even today it doesn't really do anything for me. BUT, I do have a weakness for Resees Peanut Butter Cups, but don't tell anyone! :)
So it's true! "Starve a cold, feed a fever!"
Wow - no wonder I was always sick as a kid. Sugar was the main part of my diet. Conversely, my kids are hardly ever sick. We let them have very little sugar. Good info.
I guess, with so many MILLIONS of blogs, some duplication is always going to happen. This is a great article on sugar and white blood cells and is based on the same source I used in my own blog on the identical subject. Oh, well, originality has its limits...we all have to have SOME source, correct? Nice blog site, "Paul"

Sadie - That may be it! Maybe your husband will follow your example.
Wilson Pon - Thanks for your kind words. Hope this simple tip helps.
Karen - I like sugar as much as anyone, especially chocolate chip cookies! However, I go out of my way to avoid the stuff, since it causes inflammation to the body, a major cause of sickness and disease.
John - I like the Resees too, especially when they've been in the freezer for awhile! Snickers are even better! But hey, I have resolutions for the new year.
territerri - It's true!
My Autism Insights - Let sugar be a rare treat for your kids, not a daily staple.
Retired and Restless - Doug, I actually posted this originally on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. My source is Weigh of Wisdom, from a couple that lives in Arizona.
We changed our Internet provider and ran into technical problems. So we were not online for most of the week. I called my wife at work and asked her to log in to my Blogger account and do this post for me, so my blog would be up to date.
Also, my post here is dated for Wednesday morning and lists the source. Your post on this subject does not list any sources and is dated for Thursday - the next day. Hhmmm... Thanks for stopping by and commenting for the first time.
I tried to add you to my blog roll but for some darn reason I could not lik to you site from the blogroll.if I type you in I can link but not from my blog Go Figure.
Mike - Don't you just love technology? If it were not for my techie wife, I would hardly know how to delete email!
Thanks for stopping bye and commenting.
You're welcomed, Paul. By the way, thanks for dropping by to my blog and it's an honor to have your comments at my blog!
It explains why I spent 3 days in bed during the Christmas period. I had only just got rid of a cold a week before the hols started!
My sugar consumption increased with chocolates and beer plus I polished off a bottle of Bacardi. And to put the icing on the cake, I was still training on my bike!
This is great info. I didn't know about the sugar connection.
But another way to avoid the flu and colds is just to never touch another person or anything anybody else touches. Ever! ;)
Ok....cutting down on sugar products sounds a lot easier.... ;)
Hi Paul,
This is great information. I don't know if I can give up sugar altogether, but I can certainly cut back on the stuff.
Also wanted to thank you for visiting my blog and saying hello, (hickoryhills.blogspot.com). I need to write more on that one! Soon! I've been busy working on my others. Too many blogs, so little time. :)
Noooo!
According to this, I'm in danger from Halloween (is it my fault if kids don't eat all the candy I buy?) through Christmas. That's not good. But how can I give up pumpkin pie, sugar cookies, and candy corn?
Is it possible to split the difference? Do my white blood cells need to be a full 100% effective, or can I still eat sweets and be okay with them operating at 60%-80% capacity?
It's nice to know that science supports something that I know instinctively--that I feel better when I avoid sugar.
Wow, this is some great information. I'll do anything to try and not get a cold. Of course I've already had bronchitis this winter, but I fought it off without antibiotics. Yippie. Thanks for sharing and stopping by my place. Love your blog.
I guess we women will get sick often, since we are actually made of "sugar and spice and everything nice." :) One thing I've learned is that, even when I'm sick, I'm never without an appetite! By the way, thanks for your kind comments on my blog - even if tongue-in-cheek!
Great suggestions, Paul. I had no idea the impact sugar had on colds and flus. It's one more reason to eat healthy! Plus I love the picture of the kid in that crazy hat!!!
I am totally sitting her eating candy while I read this...
No wonder I have a perpetual runny nose!
i've been telling my kids this for years. i'm going to print this and make them read it! thanks!
That's really interesting. I never knew there was a connection between sugar consumption and illness (other than diabetes and the like, of course).
Thank you for the great info! Hopefully I can avoid getting the flu this year, and I'll remember this for when Logan starts eating sugar :) I appreciated your nice blog comment!
Wow! That is so interesting! The other problem with sugar is that cancer cells love sugar--avoiding sugar or keeping it at a minimum is surely a wise decision (one that I have trouble accomplishing--I have such a sweet tooth.) I appreciate this information--one more reason to keep thinking about every food related choice I make :)
I am glad this article as well as the comments are bringing to light the damage caused by processed sugar. I have cut out all white sugars and flours from my diet and feel the beneficial effects daily!
To Your Health!
