
As a former student of East Carolina University, it was great to see LaShawn Merritt beat defending champion Jeremy Wariner to win the Olympic men's 400 meters title. Merritt won by the widest margin since 1896.Merritt, who also attended East Carolina, pulled away down the stretch Thursday night to win in 43.75 seconds — nearly a full second ahead of silver medalist and visibly frustrated Wariner, who finished in 44.74.
