Tim Russert: 1950-2008

Along with everyone else, I was shocked to come home Friday and learn that Tim Russert was dead, having died of an apparent heart attack. The man was only fifty-eight years old. So I decided to do a Sunday morning post in honor of the late NBC News' Washington bureau chief and moderator of "Meet the Press."

According to MSNBC News,
Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday's "Meet the Press" broadcast when he collapsed. He was rushed to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, where resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Russert's physician, Michael Newman, said cholesterol plaque ruptured in an artery, causing sudden coronary thrombosis.

Russert had earlier been diagnosed with asymptomatic coronary artery disease, but it was well-controlled with medication and exercise, and he had performed well on a stress test in late April, Newman said. An autopsy revealed that he also had an enlarged heart, Newman said.
Saturday morning, my wife and I were talking about all of this over breakfast. Our conversation made me reflect about my own life. Since we now have a one year-old son, how can I make sure something like this doesn't happen to me? I also wondered if there was anything Tim Russert could have done to have better avoided a heart attack. Or was it simply his appointed time to go?

"It's just a shame. Tim was a regular guy with that perpetual smile he wore naturally all the time. He loved life and got everything he could out of it. Whether it was at dinner here in Florida while his son was taking golf lessons, or on the set of 'Meet The Press', Tim was always the same with me: genuine. He never condescended to anyone and was the consummate professional. He will be hard to replace. He was the closest thing there was at any of the networks to an objective journalist." - Rush Limbaugh

Like all things regular and reassuring, his presence will be missed.
